CONSULTING SERVICES

Client Portfolio: Kendall Healthcare, Doba, National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), Patagonia, Proctor & Gamble, Conoco, Boy Scouts of America, W. L. Gore, Tender Corp., and More

I offer the following services:

  • Engineering Consulting
  • Outdoor Industry Consulting
  • Public Speaking / Corporate Training
  • Private Mentoring

Engineering Consulting

I offer project-based consulting services in the areas of performance next-to-skin textiles (moisture transport, microbial management, and surface coatings), portable water treatment (chemical, physico-chemical, electro-chemical, electro-optical, filtration, and bio-efficacy), and structural load analysis on / design of skeletal-frame skinned tension shelters.

Outdoor Industry Consulting

I offer consulting services to the Outdoor Industry, focused primarily on the above (see Engineering Consulting), but also in the areas of publishing, community development, product design and testing, small business development, and organizational development (esp. for medium to large sized companies with structural deficiencies in time-to-market and product life cycle communications).

Public Speaking & Corporate Training

I’m available for a limited number of public speaking engagements (3 months advance notice requested), and offer some pro bono services to the Scouting and nonprofit community (travel expenses appreciated). Most of my public speaking focuses on expeditions, packrafting, ultralight backpacking, tenkara fly fishing, and lifestyle simplicity. Most of my corporate training focuses on a curriculum that I’ve developed that is centered on the topics of reductive business processes, servant leadership trends, and creating corporate community. My preference is to conduct corporate training seminars in the backcountry where you won’t have Blackberry Reception. Trust me, you’ll get more out of it that way, and it’s a lot more fun for both of us.

Jump Start Mentoring: 30 Days

This one month program gives you an hour-long phone, video, or face-to-face conference with me once a week, and weekly email access (up to 2 lengthy email exchanges per week).

Immersion Mentoring: 12 Months

This one year program gives you a two hour-long phone, video, or face-to-face conference with me once a month, weekly email access (up to 2 lengthy email exchanges per week), and an invitation to join me on a private 3-day/2-night weekend retreat/trip.

What About Hourly Consulting?

I *rarely* offer hourly consulting because of (a) the inability for us to foster deep engagement, and (b) the inability for us to achieve the greatest rewards from each other – which I believe are developed in response to long term projects and relationships. I will consider hourly consulting on a case by case basis as a means to explore entry into a longer term mentoring/consulting relationship. Hourly consulting is primarily solicited for business development, product design, industry consulting, and engineering consulting – I do not normally offer hourly consulting for personal development.

Availability

I take a very limited number of consulting & mentoring clients so I can devote as much personal attention, service, and quality to the clients that I have, and develop engaging relationships with them. Thus, mentoring is offered in response to an application process only – not only to see if your needs are a good fit for my abilities and interests, but also to make sure I have bandwidth available to help you as much as possible.

“Ryan is a very dynamic speaker who not only has great expertise in the field but can clearly share it in a manner that is relevant and entertaining to his audience. Ryan’s presentation style is very effective, the perfect mix of technical knowledge, humor, philosophy and story-telling. Inspiring photographs and videos show another area of Ryan’s talents as he smoothly delivers them via very engaging multi-media presentations.” – Daniel Galhardo, Tenkara USA (on Ryan’s featured address at the 2011 Tenkara Summit)

Testimonials

“I am tempted to say that Dr. J has forgotten more about light weight backcountry travel than most “experts” on the topic will ever know, but the truth is I don’t think he’s forgotten anything. His approach is as endearingly fresh as his field research is scientifically rigorous. When Ryan speaks, I listen.”
– Demetri Coupounas, CEO & Founder, GoLite LLC

“Dr. Jordan brought the Montana BSA Ultralight Backpacking High Adventure program to the Boone and Crockett Club’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Ranch at the Elmer E. Rasmuson’s Wildlife Conservation Center in 2010, launching the nation’s first BSA High Adventure Leadership Training dedicated to ultralight backpacking programming in May and the nation’s first “ultralight” BSA High Adventure Scout Trek in July. Dr. Jordan is very efficient and self motivated in the planning, logistics, and delivery of these programs. He maintains a professional approach with the students while incorporating their involvement and fostering their own leadership. His approach for a “hands on” teaching environment is admirable and he uses a variety of leadership styles to engage a variety of student learning styles. Dr. Jordan has developed a strong working relationship with our staff at the Boone and Crockett Club and is capable of assembling and training a program staff that are talented, qualified and pleasant.”
– JoAnne Cobb, Montana High Adventure Base Camp Director, Boone and Crockett Club, RWCC Facilities Coordinator

“It’s tough to find a consultant in this field that has the right combination of field experience, hands-on technical knowledge, engineering background and formal education. We found that in Dr. Ryan Jordan. Dr. Jordan’s experience with technical outdoor gear, material sourcing and testing, design, prototyping and engineering have helped our organization provide accurate and relevant solutions to challenging problems. He has provided excellent written assessments, presentation materials, prototypes and analysis to several weight saving projects.”
– Al Deibert, Program Manager, MilTech

“Ryan Jordan’s expertise was absolutely invaluable to NOLS when we started our Lightweight Backpacking Program. He was quick to understand our programmatic needs and provide workable solutions and suggestions to insure we were able to meet our lightweight goals.”
– Gary Cukjati, Rocky Mountain Director, National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS)
